چکیده

(FT) Raman spectroscopy is used for the first time to identify pigments used in 19 & 20 century Japanese and Vietnamese Lacquerwares. IR spectroscopy is used to assess the Lacquer matrix. Different operative conditions and parameters were experimented with on a limited number of lacquerwares in order to determine the optimal procedure for the identification of pigments/dyes as potential chronological or technological markers. The test was then performed in the collector’s rooms with a mobile Raman set-up. Different pigments (vermilion, Prussian Blue, Naples Yellow, Phtalocyanine Blue, anatase, rutile, chalk, carbon black) were identified despite a strong fluorescence and a rapid degradation of both pigments and binder under increasing laser power. Better spectra were obtained on older lacquerwares.

FROM BECKMANN TO BASELITZ – TOWARDS AN IMPROVED MICRO-IDENTIFICATION OF ORGANIC PIGMENTS IN PAINTINGS OF 20th CENTURY ART

Today, synthetic organic pigments play a major role as colorants of excellent light-fastness in artists' paints. Their analytical determination in paintings gains steady importance with respect to attribution and studio practice of certain artists as well as dating and authentication. Synthetic organic pigments have extremely varied chemical structures and properties such as colouring strength,...

Detection and Characterization of Human Teeth Caries Using 2D Correlation Raman Spectroscopy

Background: Carious lesions are formed by a complex process of chemical interaction between dental enamel and its environment. They can cause cavities and pain, and are expensive to fix. It is hard to characterize in vivo as a result of environment factors and remineralization by ions in the oral cavity. Objectives: The development of a technique that gives early diagnosis which is non-invasi...

Potential and limits of Raman spectroscopy for carotenoid detection in microorganisms: implications for astrobiology.

In this paper, it is demonstrated how Raman spectroscopy can be used to detect different carotenoids as possible biomarkers in various groups of microorganisms. The question which arose from previous studies concerns the level of unambiguity of discriminating carotenoids using common Raman microspectrometers. A series of laboratory-grown microorganisms of different taxonomic affiliation was inv...

Biosensing Based on Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy by Using Metal Nanoparticles

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising tool in the analytical science because it provides good selectivity and sensitivity without the labeling process required by fluorescence detection. This technique consists of locating the target analyte on nanometer range of roughed Au-nanoparticles. The presence of the metal nanoparticles provides a tremendous enhancement to the result...

Computer-assisted Pigment Identification in Artworks

False-color infrared represents a well known method for non-invasive pigment identification in artworks. This is particularly useful in the field of conservation of cultural heritage as it provides useful information about painting materials, techniques, retouches. However, the interpretation of a false-color image is still carried out just by “naked eye” evaluation, thus suffering from the dou...
